Career Trajectory
Bio
Paul Roach has a formal education in fundamental Chemistry, although has always driven multidisciplinary research and is particularly recognised for his work on advanced materials, interface science, nano-bio-interactions and micro-fabrication. His overall research aim is to combine his knowledge of chemical and bio surface engineering, and development of novel instrumentation, to revolutionise materials/ devices used in healthcare. More recently he has focussed on neural tissue fabrication in vitro, using microfluidic, 3D printing and surface chemical patterning technologies to construct living functional tissues. Paul has published and contributed invited talks in the areas overlapping (bio)materials, engineered surfaces and scaffolds, diagnostics and instrumentation for the manufacture of advanced materials.
Prof Roach’s overall research aim is to combine knowledge of chemical and bio surface engineering and development of novel instrumentation to revolutionise materials/ devices used in healthcare. Having held a lecturer and then senior lectureship at Keele University since 2010, he moved to Loughborough University to join and grow a thriving interdisciplinary research environment.
Learning from natural biological processes, Prof Roach has pioneered the understanding of interfacial interactions with nano-/micro-surfaces, from water phenomena and protein adsorption to cellular adhesion and related processes. In recognition of the scientific value, his work was featured on the cover of Chem. Commun. and reported in Nature News. He was one of the first to propose a mechanism for protein structure control on nano curved surfaces, being reported in JACS . Having worked as a PDRA for sensor development he has also a keen interest and aptitude for instrumentation design. His contribution to surface engineering, and the development of advanced materials, has been well accepted by the community with election to President of the UK Society of Biomaterials, EPSRC early career forum in manufacturing research member and various large grants bringing a community of disciplines together. He is recognised for his multidisciplinary approach to research and has been invited to present about innovation across the disciplines; of note a highlight talk at Euromat 2004, Innovation Through Diversity at Google head office 2013, Thermo Scientific Industry-faced Spectroscopy Workshops in 2013 and 2015. Receiving a competitive National Endowment for Science and Technology and the Arts (NESTA) Crucible fellowship in 2009, Prof Roach actively seeks collaboration across the disciplines to drive research innovation and impact.
