My program of research focuses on patient safety and informatics; most notably fall prevention and integration of decision support into clinical workflows for care team member use (including patients and family). I conduct research on use of high and low-tech tools to engage patients and family in their plan of care. I am the lead investigator on the Fall TIPS (Tailoring Interventions for Patient Safety) studies. I am also site PI for the CONCERN (Communicating narrative Concerns entered by RNs) study that is using machine learning and natural language processing methods to identify and to protect patients at risk for deterioration. I am the author of 2 books, over 190 peer reviewed publications, and have presented my work nationally and internationally. I am currently a member of the National Pressure Injury Prevention Panel Board of Directors, past President and Board Chair of the American Medical Informatics Association, an elected fellow of American Academy of Nursing, the American College of Medical Informatics, and the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics.
