Bio
Dr. Olga Verkhoglyadova is Supervisor of the Ionospheric and Atmospheric Remote Sensing (IARS) Group at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the California Institute of Technology, specializing in scientific aspects of ionospheric and atmospheric remote sensing with GPS and Low-Orbiting Satellite (LEO), and space weather. She has been with JPL since 2008. Dr. Verkhoglyadova is leading a study on mesoscale dynamics of the high-latitude ionosphere. She has studied ionosphere-thermosphere dynamics and energy budget during magnetic storms and analyzed LEO satellite measurements. She is currently involved in processing radio occultations of COSMIC, GRACE, Champ and TerraSAR-X and retrievals of atmospheric parameters. Dr. Verkhoglyadova participates in GPS data processing and analysis of earthquake effects on the ionosphere. Dr. Verkhoglyadova studied properties of low-frequency waves in the Earth’s magnetosphere (chorus and hiss) and analyzed wave data from GEOTAIL and POLAR. Dr. Verkhoglyadova was Adjunct Professor at the Department of Space Science, University of Alabama in Huntsville where she participates in development of the PATH (Particle Acceleration and Transport in Heliosphere) code for modeling of particle acceleration at travelling ICME-driven shocks. She also studied solar energetic particle effects on the middle atmosphere and ozone depletion. Dr. Verkhoglyadova is a recipient of several NASA awards and a co-author of about 140 scientific papers. In 2023 she was awarded the Principal designation for advancing understanding of particle acceleration by the solar wind, and scientific leadership in heliophysical science.
