Since 2001, I took up a research career at the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Auckland, New Zealand. The research undertaken was a complementary two-fold plan and is continuing to date. One segment was to assess the benefits of supplemented selenium in 572 New Zealand men as a genetics, lifestyle, and biomarker study. The other is on the influence of genetics, lifestyle, and biomarkers towards prostate cancer diagnosis, prognosis and management assessed through 515 prostate cancer patients from New Zealand. My goals include the use of demographic, genetic, lifestyle, and trace element profiles, alongside standard clinical procedures towards better prediction of significant prostate cancer at screening, prognoses, and management, and finding a solution to overcome delays in high-risk prostate cancer diagnoses in New Zealand men especially those sharing similar genetic profiles with our Māori and Pacific men.
