Niels Bormann

Niels Bormann received the Ph.D. degree in geophysics from the Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand. In 2000, he joined the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), Reading, U.K., where he is currently a Principal Scientist leading a team of research scientists involved in the assimilation of microwave radiances and atmospheric motion vectors (AMVs) in ECMWF’s global numerical weather prediction system. Since 2000, he has been involved in the assimilation of a wide range of satellite observations, including microwave and infrared sounding radiances from various sensors, as well as AMVs. He introduced a number of new observations in the ECMWF system (e.g., radiances from ATMS), conducted the first assimilation studies with polar AMVs, and developed the first direct assimilation of infrared limb radiances. His research interests include the characterization and specification of observational uncertainties, the calibration/validation of new satellite data, as well as forecast impact studies. Dr. Bormann is a member of several advisory groups to EUMETSAT and ESA and others, and currently a Co-Chair of the International TOVS Working Group.
