Nelson Ferreira

Dr. Nelson Ferreira graduated in Biology at FCUP, University of Porto, Portugal (2005). In 2011, he was awarded his PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Summa cum laude) from ICBAS, University of Porto. During his PhD research, Dr. Ferreira focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR). His first-author peer-reviewed publication on small-molecule inhibitors of ATTR (PMID: 21740906) was selected as one of the most influential articles by the Portuguese Society of Biochemistry on the occasion of its 50th anniversary (12 articles selected out of 303), highlighting the excellence of his PhD work. In 2012, Dr. Ferreira was awarded a 3-year FCT Postdoctoral Fellowship to pursue his preclinical research on ATTR at IBMC/i3S, University of Porto. In 2015, after being awarded a highly competitive 3-year Lundbeck Postdoctoral Grant (Admission rate: 9%), Dr. Ferreira moved to DANDRITE, Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, Aarhus University, Denmark, to study the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying Parkinson's Disease (PD), specifically the prion-like spreading of misfolded alpha-synuclein through synaptically connected neuronal populations. During 2019-2022, Dr. Ferreira was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Biomedicine/DANDRITE, Aarhus University. Dr. Ferreira published 29 peer-reviewed articles with and an average impact factor of 7.0; >1300 citations; and H-Index of 21. In early 2022, Dr. Ferreira left his position in the academia and joined a leading global Pharma company.
