I work in the Schools of Life Course Sciences, and Immunology and Microbial Sciences (Supervisor, Dr Manu Shankar-Hari) to investigate the pathophysiology of severe inflammation following cardiac surgery in infants; and the immune response to sepsis in adults. I am using "omic" sciences, particularly transcriptomics, and immunological methods, particularly analyses of flow cytometry data, in these contexts. We are also aiming to take a "life course" view of our patients in intensive care, acknowledging that the consequences of each admission to an intensive care unit will have profound importance for a patient's long-term health.
My doctoral research (Oxford Vaccine Group/WCHG Oxford, 2017) investigated whole blood transcriptomics, culture of unstimulated PBMCs, and standard serology to develop novel diagnostic tests for childhood pneumonia, and then applied these tests to important epidemiological settings. This work was funded by my Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellowship and was in collaboration with a long-running study of childhood pneumonia in Nepal.
