个人简介
I have more than 13 years of experience in cultivation and physiologic/genomic characterization of extremophilic microorganisms in special archaeal and bacterial systems from hydrothermal environments. I am particularly interested on the role microorganisms play in the environment, and in understanding microbial community composition and activity as a function of the geology. Bioinformatic tools including genomics and metagenomics are central to my research, alongside classical geochemical, physiological and bioenergetics approaches. Together I apply these techniques to answer the fundamentals of: who, what, when, where, and how microorganisms are living in, influencing and responding to their “extreme” habitats.
I have performed field and laboratory research in different extreme environments, from the cold temperatures of Antarctica to the hyperthermal springs of Yellowstone National Park (YNP), to nutrient-starved sub-seafloor sediment communities in the North Atlantic gyre. This range of experience has given me a broad perspective on the various physiological strategies life uses to inhabit these environments, how environmental factors can shape microbial communities and the different ways we may detect life in these sites.
Professional skillset includes Microbial Physiology, Astrobiology, Geobiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Field Research, Manuscript Writing, and Grant Writing.
I have always been interested in ways to contribute and connect with the scientific community but also to students and people in general. I constantly contribute to science by being an active reviewer for several journals. In addition, I was one of the guest editors of the special issue “Genetics and Genomics of Acidophiles” from the journal Genes.
I have authored or contributed to 26 peer-reviewed publications and 3 textbook chapters. Three of these investigations have been featured as cover issues of different journals including Nature Geoscience, Applied and environmental Microbiology, and Environmental Microbiology
