I apply Design Methods to a range of innovation areas, across commercial, social and VCS contexts. My primary concern is designing with a focus on understanding people's lived experience of the products, services and systems that they engage with. In the area of Healthcare Services, my research focuses on understanding how people really experience Health and Care. To establish this person-centred care perspective, I use a range of co-designing and engagement methods, including creative workshops with the staff teams involved in delivering care as well as with representative groups of the people/patients accessing those services. The purpose is to co-create and prototype a range of interventions that could improve care pathways. I have applied this approach in areas including social prescribing, post-stroke care pathways, oral-health/mouthcare, supporting family-carers, data-enriched GP services, supporting families with pre-term babies. My funding partners in this work have included: InnovateUK, NESTA, NHS Trusts, Hitachi Social Innovation, Tiny Lives Trust, NIHR (RfPB), EPSRC. Insights gained through this approach can be at the level of new policy recommendations as well as more tangible intervention components (such as factsheets, person-to-person tips, online resources, vouchers, posters) ready to implement and evaluate at pilot scale.
