He has taken initiatives in developing various methods of perioperative managements (i.e. ultrasound guided PTC, BTBD, GB drainage, portal vein embolization, intermittent hemihepatic inflow occlusion, warm ischemia in living donor) and surgical techniques (i.e. subsegmentectomy, inferior hepatic vein preserving hepatectomies) for HPB surgery throughout his career, and has contributed to establishing techniques for safe hepatic resection and living donor liver transplantation. He has published more than 900 journal articles and book chapters. Has served on the editorial boards for many leading journals in the fields of HPB surgery, ultrasound medicine and transplantation surgery. Professor Makuuchi is currently the President of the International Association of Surgeons, Gastroenterologists and Oncologists (IASGO). He has given more than 900 lectures as an invited speaker at national and international scientific meetings.
