Bio
Martyn Chipperfield joined the School in January 1999. After obtaining his PhD at Cambridge he worked in the Space Science Department of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and then at the French Met. Office in Toulouse. Before coming to Leeds he was a Research Fellow and Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge.
His research interests centre on the chemistry of the global stratosphere and troposphere, e.g. studying the impact of global pollution and its interaction with climate change. In particular his work focuses on developing and using sophisticated three-dimensional atmospheric chemical-dynamical models. These models contain detailed descriptions of atmospheric chemistry and other processes and are used to interpret data from field campaigns and satellite instruments, and to predict future changes to the Earth's atmosphere.
Martyn's research group consists of 4 PhD students and 5 Post-Doctoral research fellows. Their current research includes:
Modelling of tropospheric chemistry and aerosols (e.g. impact of bromine/iodine).
Studies of stratospheric chemistry and transport (e.g. stratospheric ozone depletion and recovery and impact of solar variability).
Interpretating and exploiting satellite observations in the stratosphere and troposphere.
Data assimilation and inverse modelling to retrieve carbon fluxes.
Modelling of regional air quality using Met Office AQUM.
Modelling mesospheric metal layer chemistry.
Martyn is the PI and lead developer of the TOMCAT/SLIMCAT 3-D atmospheric model. He is a PI in the NERC centres NCAS and NCEO.
Martyn was the first Director of the Leeds-York NERC Doctoral Training Partnership (2013-2017). The DTP started in 2014 and recruits around 28 PhD students per year across 6 departments in the two universities.
