I started my research career doing my thesis at the Public University of Navarra and this work resulted in two publications as first author in Oncogene and British J Cancer. Later in 2003, I joined Dr. Fueyo's group as a postdoctoral fellow at the “Brain Tumor Center”at MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston), where I was subsequently Junior Faculty until 2009. The main objective of Dr. Fueyo's laboratory is to understand the regulation of the cell cycle in malignant gliomas to develop oncolytic adenovirus based on the Delta-24 platform. Specifically, I participated in the construction and characterization of a new oncolytic virus with a higher potency and greater selectivity for brain tumor therapy. These data were summarized in 4 articles published in Cancer Res (2), Mol Ther and Cancer Gene Ther. In addition, during this time I carried out collaborative work together with Dra. Gómez-Manzano. This collaboration resulted in work detailing the importance of the E2F-1 protein in the regulation of telomere expression, where I was first author as well. To summarize my career, I will highlight that I have published more than 60 articles in leading magazines and that our work has been presented at national and international conferences. My work has an H factor of 34 with more than 4700 citations in total. My contribution to the field of brain tumor research was recognized with prestigious fellowships from the American Brain Tumor Association and the Alex Lemonade Stand Foundation. In 2010, I began my career as an independent researcher thanks to a “Ramon y Cajal” grant and a MarieCurie IRG. Since I came to CUN, I have been able to obtain extramural funding from international organizations, the Carlos III Institute and various regional calls. In 2013, I received the “Lóreal-Unesco for Women in Science” award that recognizes young scientists with brilliant careers. In 2019 I received the “Rural Woman” and “Cadena Ser_Navarra-Ciencia” awards. During this time, I have also been able to publish as last author in journals such as JCI, Nat Comun, Clin Can Res, NeuroOncology among others. Moreover, we have performed numerous collaborations and I served as reviewer for the ANEP, Horizon 2020, and other international organizations. Of clinical significance, our research has led to several clinical trials at our institution where patients with adult and pediatric brain tumors are being treated with different oncolytic viruses. These trials are not only showing that they are safe, but there is already robust data on their efficacy for these patients, which is in itself relevant. In recent years, my research has been focused on new therapeutic strategies for childhood brain tumors and specifically high-grade gliomas and diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas. Along these lines, we have obtained funding from the US Department of Defense and an ERC Consolidator to continue advancing in finding new therapies for childhood brain tumors.
