Bio
I am a doctoral candidate specializing in Nutritional Immunology at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade. Currently, I am conducting my Ph.D. research at the Centre of Research Excellence in Nutrition and Metabolism, Institute for Medical Research, National Institute of the Republic of Serbia, University of Belgrade. My academic journey began back in 2018 when I enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Immunobiology. During that time, I volunteered at the Department of Ecotoxicology in the Institute for Biological Research "Siniša Stanković" and started my work there.
In 2019, I became a Junior Researcher and embarked on a project titled "Immunomodulatory Effects of Xenobiotics and Biotic Environmental Factors on Populations of Mouse Rodents." This research focused on investigating the toxicity of the heavy metal cadmium on various physiological functions. Throughout my academic career, I have had a keen interest in understanding the impact of different antigens on the human body, especially in the context of diet, nutrition, and their effects on health and disease.
To further pursue my research interests, I joined the Group for Nutrition and Metabolism at the Institute for Medical Research. There, I initiated my Ph.D. thesis on the project "Biological Mechanisms, Nutritional Intake, and Status of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Folate: Improving Nutrition in Serbia." At the same time, I also contributed to the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) project, "Support to National Dietary Surveys in Compliance with the EU Menu Methodology (sixth support) - The Adults' Survey," which encompassed individuals aged 10 to 74 years old.
Currently, I am fully dedicated to my doctoral thesis in Nutritional Immunology, where I am investigating and comparing the effects of different diets, specifically vegan, vegetarian, and omnivore diets, on the immune system. My comprehensive analysis involves evaluating various markers of immune function, including cytokine and chemokine levels, acute phase protein status, proinflammatory cytokine production, oxidative stress, nutrient profiles (such as vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids), concentrations of eicosanoids and adipokines, comprehensive biochemical parameters, and meticulous dietary pattern tracking. For this research, my study population comprises 160 participants, including 80 individuals adhering to vegetarian diets (both vegan and vegetarian) and 80 omnivores residing in Belgrade, Serbia.
As a member of scientific societies, including the Serbian Nutrition Society, Serbian Biochemical Society, Society of Medical Biochemists of Serbia, and Serbian Geological Society, I am committed to advancing my field and contributing to the scientific community.
In my research endeavors, I firmly believe in treating each individual as a unique entity, emphasizing the necessity for personalized approaches to diet and healing, particularly in the management of illness and disease. I hold a strong conviction that the mind and body are interconnected, highlighting the importance of adopting a multidisciplinary approach that integrates aspects of psychology, nutrition, and immunology. I firmly assert that our dietary choices fundamentally shape our health outcomes, embodying the notion that we are, indeed, what we eat.
Bachelor's degree GPA: 9,81/10,00
Master's degree GPA: 10,00/10,00
Ph.D studies GPA so far: 9,00/10,00
Beyond my academic pursuits, I am an avid collector of crystals, minerals, and plants. My personal collection features over 100 unique specimens, and I am deeply interested in the geological processes that give rise to these natural wonders.
