Marcia Pinto Alves Mayer

I am a dentist, specialized in Periodontology, and have a master and a PhD degree in Microbiology. As head of the Oral Microbiology Lab, at the Dept of Microbiology, Institute of Biomedical Sciences , University of São Paulo, mentored 19 Ph.D. students, and 18 Master students, both from Microbiology, Institute of Biomedical Sciences and Periodontology, School of Dentistry, University of São Paulo. I have been Professor of Oral Microbiology since 1984, teaching Dental students at the School of Dentistry, University of São Paulo. My administrative activities include the coordination of the PhD program in Microbiology, USP from 2011-2013, and head of Dept of Microbiology from 2017 to 2019. I authored/co-authored over 150 publications in scientific journals, and my research is focused on the interactions between oral bacteria and the host. My lab is interested in evaluating the oral and gut microbiome, and the role of dysbiosis with different oral and systemic conditions, as well as with other features such as the patients' immunological profiles. We also aim to develop strategies to regain microbial balance through the use of probiotics and natural compounds.
