Career Trajectory
Bio
Dr Card's primary research interest is in the fate and effects of micropollutants in wastewater and environmental systems. Her postdoctoral research deals with the formation of toxic transformation products from micropollutants in wastewater. This work includes the development of toxicophore libraries and formulation and experimental evaluation of schemes to predict which compounds may lead to toxic transformation products. The focus of her PhD dissertation was on the environmental biogeochemistry of natural hormones and synthetic hormone mimics used in livestock agriculture, and included the sorption of natural and synthetic estrogens to soil, uptake and transformation of the compounds by maize seedlings and associated microbes, and the impact of the compounds on crop seed germination. Dr Card's undergraduate experiences spanned a broad range within the biological and environmental sciences, including plant biochemistry, tallgrass prairie restoration, and mammal rehabilitiation.
