Founder and leader of the research group “Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics” (MPET) (with quality label from Generalitat de Catalunya) (http://www.ub.edu/ibub/research-group/regulacio-dels-sistemes-de-transport-rst/). MPET belongs to the Oncology Program of CIBEREHD (since 2006) (https://www.ciberehd.org/grupos/grupo-de-investigacion?id=16114) and to the Pediatric Cancer Program of the Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu (IR SJD) since its creation in 2015 (https://www.irsjd.org/ca/recerca/48/farmacologia-molecular-i-terapies-experimentals). IRSJD has been incorporated into CERCA, the network of research institutes of excellence in Catalonia. MPET is a worldwide reference in the field of the biology and pharmacology of nucleoside and drug transporters, particularly focusing on hCNTs and hENTs proteins and their links with drug responsiveness and nucleoside metabolism. My laboratory has comprehensively addressed the study of nucleoside transporter pharmacology by using complementary techniques, such as flux measurements and electrophysiology, for a better understanding of drug-transporter and drug-drug interactions. We were also able to demonstrate that some structural determinants were critical for translocation and identified other membrane transporters (basically some SLC22 members -hOCTs) as alternative transporters for nucleoside-derived drugs. Considering some of these genes are highly polymorphic in humans we have also addressed the pharmacogenetics impact of some gene variants, moving from drug-transporter interaction screening up to the clinical setting. The impact of transporter modulation on drug efficacy has also been addressed. Basic mechanisms regulating nucleoside transporter function have also been addressed. These studies moved from the analysis of molecular events determining transporter trafficking to the study of transporter expression in animal models and the clinical setting. My laboratory has provided consistent evidence of selected nucleoside transporters being regulated by P1 receptors. Indeed, some transporter subtypes can translocate adenosine and are likely to modulate the accessibility of this bioactive nucleoside to its membrane receptors. Moreover, we have also demonstrated that extracellular adenosine can impact on AMPK regulation by receptor-independent mechanisms which require adenosine transporters. My laboratory has also shown that selected nucleoside transporters can play roles in cell physiology beyond the mere translocation of nucleosides for salvage purposes. Some nucleoside transporters (i.e. hCNT1) might indeed play a transceptor role, being able to modulate a variety of biological events even in a translocation-independent manner. I have also hold significant scientific responsibility positions: Director of the Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona (IBUB) (since April 2016), member of the Executive Committee of the Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Deu (IR SJD) (since May 2016), member of the Evaluation Panel of the CERCA program (Catalan network of research institutes of excellence), Generalitat de Catalunya (2011-2013), Life Sciences Coordinator of AGAUR (Generalitat de Catalunya) (2009-2011), Vicerector of Research of the University of Barcelona (June 2005-November 2008), among others. As Vicerector of Research I was directly responsible for the incorporation, for the first time, of the post-doctoral contracts at the UB as well as the so-called PDA (Plan de Dedicación Académica) which modulates teaching duties based on research activity. In 2010 I was elected to the Scientific Board of the Purine and Pyrimidine Society. I am Executive Editor of Journal of Physiology and Biochemistry and Section Editor of Drug Metabolism and Transport of Frontiers in Pharmacology.
Being MPET a research group with strong academic roots, I have been involved in the training of pre-doc and post-doc researchers. I have supervised either alone or as co-supervisor 32 Ph.D. thesis so far.
