Michael J Daley

I am an environmental scientist with a passion for science education. Over the past 20 years, I have conducted research in both STEM education and ecosystem science. I have also taught in a wide variety of settings. I have taught students as an outdoor educator, a middle school science teacher, and a college professor. In addition to traditional science courses, I have taught multidisciplinary courses, courses on science education, and online teaching courses. My field research has been published in journals, including Tree Physiology, International Journal of Plant Sciences, Ecological Modeling, and Canadian Journal of Forest Research. My work on teaching and learning science in higher education has been presented at the Conference on Higher Education Pedagogy, the New England Educational Assessment Fall Forum, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education Conference, and the National Science Teachers Association Conference. I am highly involved in the NSF Robert Noyce Scholarship Program. I am currently the co-PI on two active Noyce projects at the University of Rochester preparing teacher leaders with digitally-rich teaching and learning skills. I am also engaged in two collaborative Noyce Track 4 research projects examining the persistence of STEM teachers from Noyce programs across the country. As the Director of Higher Education STEM Outreach in the Center for Professional Development and Education Reform in the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester, I am charged with managing program evaluation contracts with partners from across institutions of higher education. In the Center, we specialize in providing program evaluation services for partners engaged in STEM education projects. I manage a team with extensive knowledge and understanding of pedagogy, program evaluation design, instrument design, and data analysis and visualization. We work to help organizations and programs continuously improve. In addition to my role managing program evaluations in the Center for Professional Development and Education Reform, I am also on the faculty at the Warner School of Education. In my faculty role, I teach and advise in the Health Professions Education program. I teach a foundational course called Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and Health Care Settings and a course called Digitally-Rich Teaching and Learning. I advise about 30 students in the program and they are typically professionals with MD's, PhD's, and DMD's working at URMC.
