Our translational research work led to fundamental discoveries about human mast cells that include identifying different types of mast cells, discovering and characterizing human mast cell tryptases, producing an anti-tryptase inhibitor of potential therapeutic utility, and inventing clinically useful tryptase immunoassays that facilitate the diagnosis of systemic mastocytosis, of anaphylaxis, and of hereditary alpha-tryptasemia. Caring for patients with such disorders and being involved in related basic and translational research provides a unique perspective.
