In 2002 I got appointed professor of Molecular Medicine at Lund University. The focus of our work was slightly shifted, focusing on the role of receptor tyrosine kinases in both acute myeloid leukemia (starting projects on FLT3 in 2003 and continuing on the KIT projects) as well as projects relating to the role of oncogenic mutants of KIT in malignant melanoma. The focus is now both on the mechanisms by which the oncogenic mutants signal and how that differs from how the normal, wild-type receptors signals, finding of downstream signaling components that could be pharmacologically targeted. We are also interested in the mechanisms of acquired resistance to available tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapies. Another emerging field of interest is biomarker studies in order to decipher the signaling patterns that determine whether a certain therapy will be succesful or not, independent of mutational status.
