PROFILE
Dr. Leopold J. Streletz is Associate Professor in Neurology (Education) at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q). He is also Adjunct Professor of Neurology at Jefferson Medical College where he began his career in Medical Education. Upon graduating from Temple University School of Medicine in 1969, he trained with Dr. Richard A Chambers at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Neurology. Dr. Streletz is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with subspecialty certification in Clinical Neurophysiology and Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. In 1995, he inaugurated the ACGME accredited residency training program in Clinical Neurophysiology (EEG, EP and EMG) at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. During his tenure at JMC, he was the recipient of several NINDS/Dept of Education research awards.
In 2000, he moved to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the King Faisal Specialized Hospital and Research Center (KFSH&RC) in Jeddah. There, he organized the Neurology Section in the Neuroscience Department under the leadership of Dr John Girvin. He joined the Medical Education Program at WCMC-Q in 2005 as Course Director for Neuroscience teaching in the second year medical curriculum. He initiated the Neurology Clerkship and an elective in Neurology for the third and fourth year. He has received an appointment as Consultant with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in the Neurology Section of the Department of Medicine and an assignment in the Clinical Neurophysiology laboratory.
His basic and clinical research interest involves EEG, sensory EP’s, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and motor EP's. This research is directed at their role in the evaluation of sensory and motor function and dysfunction in man. While working in KSA, Dr. Streletz and his colleagues at KFSH&RC have reported the value of these studies done intraoperatively during thoracic spine surgery, revealing heretofore undetected anomalies of motor and sensory pathways in the Horizontal Gaze Palsy Progressive Scoliosis Syndrome. Most recently, he is collaborating with the Stroke Program at HMC and clinical researchers at Bournemouth University, UK in a QNRF funded project focused on Acute Stroke surveillance and the evaluation of TIA’s.
