Dr. Oiwa studied at Faculty of Science, University of Tokyo, (BSc, Biology, 1983), where he was infected with an enthusiasm for the molecular basis of eukaryotic flagellar movement by Professor Keiichi Takahashi. He stayed on to gain a PhD (Zoology, 1988), working with Prof. Keiichi Takahashi on force generating mechanism of a protein motor ‘dynein’ and eukaryotic flagella. Studies as an associate professor on another protein motor ‘myosin’ by using in vitro reconstitution systems were with Prof. Haruo Sugi at the Teikyo University (Tokyo, Japan, from 1988 to 1993). He joined the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT, former Communications Research Laboratory) – Kobe in 1993 and he applied his knowledge and techniques to understanding the properties of protein motors as nanometer-scale machines as a staff scientist. He researched at the National Institute for Medical Research in London as a visiting researcher on the synthesis of nucleotide analogues and their applications to single molecule studies. As a group leader of Protein Biophysics Group of NICT, he researched structure and properties of members of the myosin and dynein motor families and also found their applications to nanometer-scale devices. He served as the Director General of the Advanced ICT Research Institute, NICT since 2008 to 2012. He is now the Distinguished Researcher in NICT. He was awarded the 23rd Osaka Science Prize in 2005 and Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2020.
