As Dean of Translational Genetics, I am committed to apply genetic and genomic approaches to benefit patients through Precision Medicine approaches. Our lab seeks to enhance diversity and equity, recognizing that the types of questions asked are affected by the researchers asking them. Our lab has substantial expertise in multi-modal, single cell approaches (gene expression, ATAC, spatial) and application of these approaches has provided substantial insight into immunology generally, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) particularly. Genetic discovery of loss-of-function, protective alleles such as in the interleukin 23 receptor increases the likelihood of successful therapeutic targeting, especially in phase 2 to phase 3 clinical trial advances. Digitized and clinically-banked tissue scrolls in the Department of Pathology provide an abundant source of data and biospecimens with which to apply emerging single cell technologies. These efforts will accelerate research to clinical care advances.
