Career Trajectory
Bio
Joseph M. Piwowar (M’02) received the Bachelor’s of Environmental Studies degree in geography, the M.A. degree in GIS, and the Ph.D. degree in remote sensing from the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada, in 1982, 1987, and 1996, respectively.
He is the Head of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies and the Director of the Environmental Research Response and Applications (TERRA) Lab., University of Regina, Regina, SK, Canada. Currently, he is the Canada Research Chair in Geomatics and Sustainability with the University of Regina. In 1995, he published one of the first papers that introduced the concept of hypertemporal image analysis. Since then, he has been a pioneer in the development of the temporal mixture analysis technique and the application of principal components analysis to image sequences. Using these analysis strategies, he has studied the impacts of climate change on Arctic sea ice and on the grasslands of the Northern Great Plains of North America. His research interests include the extraction of change information from long time series of remote sensing images.
Dr. Piwowar was in the organizing committees for IGARSS 2002, Toronto, ON, Canada, and IGARSS 2014, Québec, QC, Canada, and was the General Conference Chair for the 31st Canadian Symposium on Remote Sensing. He is an Executive Member of the Canadian Remote Sensing Society and currently is the Treasurer of that association. He has served as a Guest Editor for special issues of the Canadian Journal of Remote Sensing and the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing.
