Joseph’s research integrates classical and molecular approaches to resolve patterns of genetic variation within and between marine populations (or species), identify historical and contemporary factors that influence separation of such populations (or species), incorporate phylogeographic findings into the design of marine protected areas, and track evolutionary responses in natural (or experimental) populations. He uses carefully selected model systems, along with cutting-edge genomic methods and computer simulation, to answer a diverse set of questions addressing the origins and persistence of such marine biodiversity. Although his main focus is on marine organisms, Joseph addresses broad ecological and evolutionary questions using non-traditional model systems, which has led to publications in a range of journals (e.g., Coral Reefs, Conservation Genetics, Ecology Letters, Journal of Evolutionary Biology, Molecular Ecology).
