José A Cuesta

I was born in Girona, Spain, in 1964 and moved two years later to Madrid, where I have been living since then. I graduated in physics at Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1987 and got a physics PhD at the same university in 1992. Since then I work in the Mathematics department of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, where I was appointed as an associate professor in 1995. My research field is statistical physics. For a long period, including my PhD, I applied density functional theory to complex fluids (liquid crystals, mixtures, colloids, etc.), mainly to map out their phase behaviour and phase transitions. I still do some work on this subject (although my interest is steadily fading away). For a short interval when I moved to Universidad Carlos III I worked in semiconductor theory, a research that I disontinued long ago. My current interests focus on the theory of complex systems, both biologically and socially motivated, and on evolutionary dynamics, very much related to the former.
