Between 1972 and 1995, I established myself as an internationally recognised toxicologist, leading a large research group and with an extensive portfolio of external activities, including membership of government and industrial advisory committees. Since 1995, initially at Imperial College and from 2002 in Liverpool, I have taken on senior management roles which have given me a wide experience both in academic management and the interface between universities and the National Health Service.
