He has studied the immunopathogenesis of TB and TB in HIV through research collaborations in Uganda and Brazil. He has conducted clinical trials of the prevention of treatment of TB as well as the first HIV/AIDS Vaccine Trial in Africa. His research group was the first to show that TB accelerated the course of HIV infection by activating viral replication in latently infected cells.
