Mouse models have taught us a lot about human diseases, but for successful translational research more effort is needed to characterize the human immune system. Our approach is to study human immune cells from different tissues and patients directly ex vivo. In particular, we analyze molecular and functional properties of Th17 subsets and IL-10 producing regulatory T cells to understand their roles in autoimmunity and cancer. We also study how human DC subsets cross-prime cytotoxic T cell responses.
