个人简介
The Air Quality Laboratory, under the direction of Jay Turner, applies chemical engineering principles to environmental problems. Both technical and policy aspects are addressed to support the integration of research results into the environmental decision-making process. Current research spans a range of air quality-related issues.
Prof. Turner is the principal investigator for the St. Louis-Midwest Supersite. Funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and working in collaboration with researchers from five universities and one private sector partner, this field monitoring program focuses on a detailed physical and chemical characterization of airborne fine particles in the St. Louis region. This project will provide a data set suitable for the investigation of atmospheric aerosol dynamics, source-receptor relationships, control strategy development, monitoring equipment performance evaluation, and health effects.
A major research effort is directed at gaseous and particulate matter emissions from "diffuse" emission sources. Examples include biogenic hydrocarbon emissions from forests and particulate matter emissions from tire wear and resuspended road dust. Emissions from such sources are often difficult to quantify because they cannot be directly sampled under controlled conditions. In this case, field measurements are conducted and emission rates are reconstructed using modeling.
Another project focuses on nitrogen oxides abatement from stationary sources. Regional control strategies to reduce ozone air pollution mandate significant reductions in nitrogen oxide emissions from coal-fired power plants in most of the Eastern and Midwestern United States. In this arena, chemical reaction principles are applied to investigate optimal reactor designs and elucidate the interactions between injected reactants and other species present in the combustion flue gas.
Prof. Turner served on the Science and Technical Support Work Group of the USEPA FACA Subcommittee on Ozone, Particulate Matter, and Regional Haze Implementation Programs. He is also actively involved in air pollution regulatory decision-making at the state and local level.
