Javier Pozueta-Romero graduated from Málaga University (Spain) in 1987. In 1992 he got a Ph.D. in biology from Nagoya University (Japan). In 1997, after a 4-year postdoctoral training at the Institute of Plant Molecular Biology in Strasbourg (France), and a 2-year post-doctoral stay in the Institute of Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology in Valencia (Spain), he joined the Institute of Agrobiotechnology of Navarra, Spain. In September 2020 he moved to the Institute for Mediterranean and Subtropical Horticulture (IHSM) of Málaga, where he established the “Microbial-based Biostimulants” research line. His current research is largely based on the use of “omics” techniques. He discovered that beneficial and phytopathogenic microorganisms produce compounds that enhance plant growth and yield through mechanisms involving (i) enhanced production of MEP pathway-derived isoprenoids mediated by proteostatic regulatory mechanisms, and rapid changes in the redox-proteome of the plant, and (ii) activation of the beneficial soil microbiota. Also, he provided strong evidence for the occurrence of non-canonical starch and glycogen biosynthetic pathways in plants and bacteria, respectively. At mid-long term he is interested in (i) understanding the mechanisms involved in the plants´ metabolic, growth and developmental responses to environmental changes, especially to treatment with compounds emitted by microorganisms, and (ii) identification of microbial-based biostimulants and their mode of action.
