Javier Gilabert

Javier Gilabert Cervera has been an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical & Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT), Cartagena, Spain, since 2001. He was a Marie Curie Fellow at Plymouth Marine Laboratory, U.K. With a biological oceanography background, he studied plankton dynamics from an interdisciplinary point of view: from physical (hydrodynamics) to chemical (nutrient diffusion) to biological processes. Projects concerning these aspects were carried out at varying space and time scales: from coastal lagoons—the Mar Menor (SE Spain)—to the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean (90° latitudinal transects). With expertise in coastal hydrodynamic modeling, he is currently Codirector of the Underwater Vehicles Laboratory (LVS), UPCT and Principal Investigator of the EU DG-ECHO cofinanced project “Underwater Robotics Ready for Oil Spill,” working on a system of underwater, surface, and aerial autonomous vehicles to monitor oil in-water plumes.
