Janine Bryan

Dr. Janine Bryan is the VP Biological and Environmental Sciences at Whooshh Innovations leading the company’s scientific research efforts, working with other biological research laboratories to expand the existing knowledge base regarding fish passage solutions. With strong research experience in molecular biology, virology, infectious diseases of the skin, and vaccinology, Janine brings a proven track record in experimental design and developing science-based solutions, a skills-set she has turned toward fish passage with a focus on fish well-being. In her career, Janine was the lead senior research scientist for the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine at Merck Research Laboratories in West Point, PA. There, she managed basic research and clinical assay development that resulted in the licensure of the Gardasil® vaccine in 2006 and second-generation vaccine licensure of Gardasil-9® in 2014. In addition to reviewing hundreds of grant proposals and manuscripts as a member of the Merck Investigator-Initiated Study Program and Merck manuscript review board, she was an ad hoc reviewer of nine peer-reviewed scientific journals. Janine received her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Indiana University School of Medicine (IU). After completing a post doctorial fellowship at the NIAMS of the National Institute of Health, and a second at IU, Janine began what would become a ten-year tenure at Merck Research Laboratories (MRL). Janine is well published in peer-reviewed journals and is an inventor on six issued patents. After leaving Merck Research Laboratories, Janine worked as a Principal Research Scientist in the Microbiology Department at the University of Washington, completed her MBA through the University of Phoenix, and then in 2016, joined the Whooshh Innovation team in developing novel ways to move fish. Dr. Bryan’s career has included considerable experience bridging the interface between high-tech engineering and biological science. At Whooshh, Janine supervises the biological study component of the fish transport projects, which, to date, have encompassed image recognition and fish passage of over 25 different fish species. Collaborative studies have involved evaluation of the Whooshh Passage Portal, the complete Whooshh Fish Transport System, in addition to system components including volitional entry, FishL™ Recognition imaging, lever and small fish trap design, sorting and transport.
