J. Vives I Batlle

Jordi Vives i Batlle (BSc and MSc in Physics, Autonomous University of Barcelona, 1988) is a Catalan researcher with a PhD on the speciation and bioavailability of plutonium in marine ecosystems (University College Dublin, 1993) and a Professorship (chair) on Environmental and Radiation Physics (2009) at Westlakes/UCLan (UK) prior to becoming senior researcher at SCK•CEN (Belgium) in 2010, specialising in radioecology and with focus on modelling the fate, transport and biological uptake of radionuclides in the environment. He has a long track record of 35 years working for universities, government and industry in Spain, Ireland, U.S.A., UK and Belgium, being author or co-author of numerous research articles on diverse radioecology and environmental physics topics. Jordi has significant international profile in the field of marine radioecology and dosimetry to non-human biota, having participated in projects within framework of the EU as well as serving as invited expert in the IAEA, ICRP and UNSCEAR with the aim to develop the international system of radiation protection of the environment. His research goal is to establish a mathematical foundation for radioecology with links to fundamental biological and physical theory, including metabolic and kinetic-allometric modelling. In this respect, Jordi is presently active developing mathematical population (biokinetic) models for studying the dynamic interaction of radiation and other pollutants with populations and ecosystems of wildlife. Jordi has proven expertise developing models for aquatic plants (e.g. Lemna minor) which combine population growth, transfer and effect of pollutants to these organisms, with current efforts to model the effects of these pollutants in isolation or in combination.
