Career Trajectory
Bio
Johannes Meiser, head of the Cancer Metabolism group at the Department of Oncology at Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), has more than ten years of experience in the field of mammalian cell metabolism.
During successful postdoctoral stays at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine and the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute in Glasgow, which were both supported by competitive individual fellowships (FNR AFR Postdoc fellowship and DFG Research Fellowship), he specialized in the field of mammalian cell metabolism with a focus on cancer metabolism. His career was fueled by the uncovering of a new metabolic pathway for serine catabolism, a finding with which he significantly contributed to the advancement of the field. In 2018, he successfully transitioned to a Principal Investigator position at LIH, which is core funded by the FNR ATTRACT program, a 1.5 Mio €, 5-year tenure track program providing the opportunity to establish an independent research group. Due to additional external funding, his lab grew until now to a size of 8 team members composed of 4 PhD students, 3 Postdocs, and one lab manager. The core expertise of the Meiser lab resides at the quantitative analysis of mammalian cell metabolism applying stable isotope-assisted metabolic flux analysis and analytical chemistry using mass spectrometry.
Since his arrival in Luxembourg, he successfully established several inter- and intra-institutional collaborations to study the role of cell metabolism in context of the metastatic cascade. A particular focus is set but not limited to folate-dependent serine metabolism.
