In the years between 1998-2006 I have been working on the clonal structure of multi-resistant, methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the Department of Epidemiology and Clinical Microbiology of the Central Laboratory of Sera and Vaccines and the National Medicines Institute (NMI) in Warsaw. The developed strategy allowed for the detection of several MRSA clones in Poland with the global distribution. The unique observation was the detection of the spread of MRSA isolates from the Iberian clone with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin (hVISA). In the period between 2012-17, I have worked in the Department of Biochemistry and Biopharmaceuticals of NMI, concerning the search for molecular biomarkers of Huntington's disease (HD) in the area of energy metabolism and branched-chain amino acids (BCAA).
I was the leader and performer of 2 research funds of the European Huntington's Disease Network (EHDN) and 3 research funds of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in Poland. I am an author and co-author of over 40 domestic and international publications, and the first author of a patent (Pat.239387) concerning the development of a molecular method for the detection of Mycoplasma spp. in mammalian cells. Since 1998 I have been a member of the Polish Association of Microbiology, 2003, the National Chamber of Laboratory Diagnosticians, since 2005 Polish Huntington's Disease Association, and since 2009 is a member of the European EHDN network (Biomarkers Group).
Currently, I am working at the Department of Microbiology of the University Clinical Center of the MUW, where I am continuing my work in the field of microbiological molecular diagnostics. Recently, I cooperate with the Human Biome Institute as an expert in developing new methods of anaerobic bacteria cultures. The scientific and research interests concern the role of the microbiome in neurodegenerative diseases, as well as the impact of chronic infections on the development of chronic diseases of known and unknown genetic backgrounds and the creation of modern diagnostic methods.
