My primary research interest is physical human-robot interaction, including haptic display, teleoperation, and human-assist devices.

My teaching interests relate to my research, but also to the broader theme of Engineering Design. I led a team of faculty in the development of Design Thinking and Communication (DTC), which is a two-quarter introduction to the topic required of all engineering freshmen at Northwestern. I also led the development of the Certificate in Engineering Design which can be earned by any engineering undergraduate. Most recently, I worked with Prof. Donald A. Norman to develop the Master of Science in Engineering Design and Innovation, a one-year program that complements graduate-level engineering courses with a broad experience in human-centered design. I continue to direct that program. Prof. Norman and I were also founding co-Directors of the Segal Design Institute. I am also the instructor for ME 390 Introduction to System Dynamics. This is a "flipped" course: students watch lectures on video, and do "homework" in class.
