Johnson, J.E.

John E. Johnson (SM'02) received the B.S.E.E. degree and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 1984 and 1993, respectively. His doctoral work focused on GaAs photonic integrated circuits under Prof. C. L. Tang. He was with National Semiconductor for three years as a Product Engineer for analog IC manufacturing., then returned to Cornell in 1987. In 1993, he joined AT&T Bell Laboratories, which later became Lucent Technologies Bell Laboratories, Agere Systems Research and TriQuint Semiconductor. During this time, he became a Consulting Member of Technical Staff and led research into a broad range of state-of-the-art InP photonic integrated circuits, including EMLs, EA-modulated and CW high-power tunable DBR lasers, spot-size converted lasers, and SOAs operating at bit rates up to 160 Gb/s. He also worked closely with development and manufacturing teams to bring award-winning EML and tunable transmitter products to market. In 2005, he joined T-Networks (later Apogee Photonics) as the Manger of Photonics Development, where he was responsible for the development and manufacturing ramp of several 10 and 40 Gb/s EA-modulated devices. He joined CyOptics, Breinigsville, PA, in 2007 with the acquisition of Apogee Photonics as the Photonics Design Manager, where he leads a group responsible for InP chip design and product development. He is the author or coauthor of more than 50 peer-reviewed papers and 13 patents or patents pending.
