Bio
Janice joined the ESRL/PSL Hydrometeorology Modeling and Applications Team as a Research Scientist in March of 2017. Her research interests focus on the atmospheric components of the global hydrologic cycle, specifically examining ways in which we can better observe and represent these components at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Her previous work has focused on remotely sensed observations of precipitation and column water vapor, including production of the NASA Water Vapor Project - MEaSUREs (NVAP-M) global water vapor climate data record.
Janice's current work focuses on examining quantitative precipitation estimates (QPEs) in the complex terrain of Northern California as part of the Advanced Quantitative Precipitation Information (AQPI) project, with an eye towards understanding the strengths, weaknesses and uncertainties in various QPE products, and how best to use them to evaluate precipitation forecasts. Janice is also applying her remote sensing background to a number of PSL projects, including comparison of spaceborne radar observations to measurements taken during the ATOMIC field campaign, comparison of satellite radiances calculated using numerical weather prediction (NWP) model output to observed radiances, and the evaluation satellite-based QPE over ocean.
