Bio
Isabel Paiva is currently Researcher of the Centro Tecnológico e Nuclear (CTN) of the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), at Campus of Loures, with a Degree in Chemistry/Biochemistry from Lisbon Faculty of Sciences, a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Technological University of Loughborough in a partnership with AEA/UKAEA, Harwell UK and post-graduation in Radiochemistry at Florida State University, USA. She was co- coordinator of the Radioprotection and Radioactive Waste Group of the former Radiation Protection and Safety Unit, now LPSR, at Nuclear and Technological Centre/IST, Technical University, Campus of Loures with responsibilities for the R&D, T&E and international representations of the Group in her areas of expertise. She has been involved in international experts committees related to radioactive waste and radiological protection since 1998 (former expert at the ACPM committee, EC European projects reviewer, former member of the AD HOC Working Party on Nuclear Safety (WPNS), national expert on radwaste at the scientific committee of the EU (WPAQ), national expert at Art. 37º/Euratom, national member at WPNS, national representative at IAEA/WASSC committee, former NCP for the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management of the IAEA and representative at the RSC of the OSPAR Convention). IST representative at IAEA MedNET Network on Transports of Radioactive Materials. National contact point for the IAEA NEWMDB (Enable Waste Management Database) until 2008. Collaboration with the national representative in the CPM WG (Advisory Committee for Programme Management of Community Plan of Action in the Field of Radioactive Waste), in the evaluation of projects' progress reports under EURATOM (FP5 e FP6), Lux., 1998-2003.
She has been involved in E&T activities in radwaste and radiological protection (masters and post-doc programs) and for specialized workers (lifelong learning). She has been involved in research activities and responsible for projects and tasks in various projects (EURATOM FP4, FP6 and FP7, National Foundation FCT, ERAMIN, Euramet and IAEA). She is the IST representative at the IGD-TP platform. Her main research interests are radioactive waste new treatment technologies, NORM management strategies, repositories assessment, E&T in radwaste and radiological protection, ethics and public perception of the EU policies and IAEA recommendations on radwaste safety and security.
She was also being involved in the writing of the Situation national reports for the DG-TREN (Luxembourg), attended, in Brussels and Luxembourg, throughout the years, as an expert, the various meetings of the discussions of the directives on radwaste, radiological protection and safety and provided technical support to the PT REPER and to the European Council through reports and implementation of drafts to be presented to the EU Parliament. She did consultancy for the EC and IAEA on radwaste policies and NORM treatment technologies. She has organized national and international courses (IAEA and PETRUS Courses) on radioactive waste management, safety of sealed sources and public perception of geological disposal and radwaste solutions. She has been involved in E&T activities (radwaste and radiological protection) at universities (masters and post-doc programs) and for specialized workers (lifelong learning). She has been involved in research activities and responsible for projects and tasks in various projects (EURATOM FP4, FP6 and FP7, National Foundation FCT and IAEA). She is the IST representative at the IGD-TP platform.
