My research interest is in the oceanic internal processes and air-sea exchanges that drive the ocean’s leading role in Earth’s energy budget and hydrological cycle. I work with novel observations collected at sea, large public data collections and simulations from numerical models. My two primary research foci are 1) processes controlling, and impacts of, rapid warming of the Indian Ocean and southern hemisphere oceans more broadly, and 2) processes that control the poleward flux of heat across the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and hold this current’s transport steady in spite of strengthening Southern Ocean winds.
