He earned a BS degree in biology from Hebei University in 1984, a MS degree in microbiology from Zhejiang University in 1987, and a PhD degree in microbiology from the Louisiana State University in 1992. After a three-year postdoctoral training in cell biology at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Dr. Wang joined the North Shore University Hospital as the chief of the Basic Science Research Program in the Department of Emergency Medicine.
Since 1996, Dr. Wang has been investigating the roles of various macrophage- and/or liver-derived pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators in animal models of cerebral ischemia, endotoxemia, and sepsis. During the last 27 years, Dr. Wang has published more than 180 research and review articles in leading journals such as Lancet (1997, 1999), Science (1999, 2022), Science Translational Medicine (2017, 2020, 2022), Nature (2000, 2003, 2012), Nature Medicine (2004, 2004, 2013), Nature Communications (2014, 2016, 2019), Cell Host & Microbe (2018, 2020), Blood (2007, 2020), Autophagy (2012, 2016, 2016), J. Exp. Med. (1997, 1998, 2000, 2006, 2015), and Immunity (2018, 2021), which have been cited >52,000 times by the Google Scholar. In addition, Dr. Wang served as an editorial board member for several scientific journals (including Shock, Frontiers in Immunology, and Military Medical Research), as well as a permanent member for the NIH/NIGMS Surgery, Anesthesiology, and Trauma (SAT) Study Section. Since 2002, Dr. Wang has been continuously supported by eight R01 grants, one R41 grant, and one R35 grant from the NIH/NIGMS (R01GM063075, R01GM070817, R41GM123858, R35GM145331) and the NIH/NCCIH (R01AT005076).
He received more than fourteen patents regarding the use of anti-inflammatory proteins and herbal components, as well as antibodies against several newly identified inflammatory mediators. Dr. Wang also serves as a co-moderator and invited speaker at several international shock and sepsis conferences, and was recently named as the recipient of 2021 Scientific Achievement Award of the Shock Society, a premier society of basic science and medical professionals with shared interest in advancing the science of Trauma, Shock, and Sepsis.
