He had unparalleled vision, energy, and enthusiasm and considerable personal charm. His contributions were as broad as they were deep. He relished tackling key problems from innovative perspectives and did so with a prodigious ability to connect wide-ranging evidence, be it intriguing papers or curious outcrops.
