Commander Gorman began his naval career in 1989 as a Midshipman at Georgetown University through the George Washington University Naval ROTC Program. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Classics at Georgetown. He then attended medical school at Washington University in St. Louis through the Armed Forces Health Professional's Scholarship Program and graduated in 1997.
Commander Gorman completed his internship in pediatrics at the National Capital Consortium at the National Naval Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1998. After internship, he reported to the 2nd Force Service Support Group at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina as a General Medical Officer. He deployed to the Caribbean for hurricane relief efforts with the Special Marine-Air-Ground Task Force in 1999 and to Kosovo, the Ukraine and the Mediterranean with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 2000. He earned his Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer qualification on the USS Trenton (LPD-14).
In 2002, Commander Gorman completed his pediatrics residency at the National Capital Consortium under Dr. Joseph Lopreiato and Dr. Clifton Yu, and then served as Chief Resident in 2003. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric nephrology under Dr. Susan Furth, Dr. Alicia Neu, Dr. Rulan Parekh, and Dr. Barbara Fivush at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland in 2006. During his fellowship, he earned a Masters degree in Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Following fellowship training, Commander Gorman reported to the National Naval Medical Center as Staff Physician. In February 2007, he deployed to Expeditionary Medical Facility - Kuwait, and served as medical officer at the Troop Medical Clinic at Camp Arifjan and at Camp Buehring at the Iraqi Border. In 2007, Commander Gorman was appointed Associate Residency Director of the National Capital Consortium Pediatrics Residency, the only tri-
service military pediatrics training program. He completed the Harvard Macy Program for Educators in the Health Professions in 2010. In 2011, he was named Program Director of the NCC Pediatrics Residency.
Commander Gorman is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University. He attained Board Certification from the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2002. He has authored fourteen peer-reviewed journal articles and has written two book chapters. Commander Gorman’s research has focused on pediatric dialysis, growth patterns in children with kidney disease, evaluation techniques in graduate medical education, and the effects of military deployment on children. A common theme is teaching trainees practical research techniques, including competence with professional statistical software. data management, and manuscript writing, by investigating actual trainee-initiated research questions with the military health system database.
He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Association of Pediatric Program Directors, the Academic Pediatric Association, the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology and the American Society of Nephrology.
Commander Gorman’s personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 3 Gold Stars, the Army Achievement Medal, Fleet Marine Force Medal and several military and civilian research and teaching awards.
CDR Gorman is a native of Baltimore, Maryland, and is married to Elizabeth Hisle-Gorman, MSW, PhD of Bethesda, Maryland. They have 3 children and reside in Takoma Park, Maryland.
