Dr. Schattman is a leader in the field of Reproductive Medicine. He served as the 2011-2012 President of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART), the leading association of in vitro fertilization-specialized physicians. As Chair of SART’s Practice Committee from 2004 to 2009,he developed many of the guidelines that most physicians use to practice infertility. He is a member or fellow of numerous medical associations, including the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists. Dr. Schattman is an Associate Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology and Clinical Reproductive Medicine at The Ronald O. Perelman and Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine (CRM) of Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Schattman is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He is a noted specialist in treating infertility with a full range of options including IUI and in vitro fertilization (IVF), fertility preservation and minimally invasive reproductive surgery.
Fertility Preservation at CRM
Dr. Schattman has an expertise in caring for patients who are considering preserving or extending their fertility by freezing oocytes (eggs) or embryos. Egg or embryo freezing is an option for women in a wide range of circumstances, including those who may have difficulty getting pregnant after cancer treatment (oncofertility). Dr. Schattman is the Principal Investigator for a number IRB approved research studies aimed at improving outcomes for patients undergoing fertility preservation. Under these studies, women who must proceed with cancer treatment immediately and prepubertal girls are able to have ovarian tissue cryopreserved for potential future use and breast cancer patients are able to proceed with ovarian stimulation without significant increases in estrogen levels thanks to the use of an aromatase inhibitor. Reproductive Surgery
In addition to his clinical work and research in fertility preservation, Dr. Schattman is a leading minimally invasive surgeon. He was one of the first gynecologic surgeons to perform robotic surgery for reversal of tubal ligation and excision of uterine fibroids. Dr. Schattman is particularly experienced in the use of advanced surgical methods to treat common causes of infertility such as blocked fallopian tubes, intrauterine adhesions, endometriosis and ovarian cysts. He also uses minimally invasive surgical techniques to treat gynecologic conditions, including abnormal uterine bleeding and uterine malformations.
Education and Experience
Dr. Schattman earned a Bachelor of Science from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, in 1983 and his medical degree from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, in Brooklyn, New York, in 1987. He completed his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at The George Washington University Medical Center in 1991. He finished his training with a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Center for Reproductive Medicine and became a CRM faculty member in 1993.
He has received numerous awards including “Best Doctor” as well as many teaching awards. He lectures nationally and internationally on infertility topics and is sought after for his expertise on ovulation induction and in vitro fertilization. Dr. Schattman has authored numerous articles and textbook chapters and lectures both nationally and internationally on a wide range of topics in reproductive medicine.
