Professional experience
Giulio Cozzi graduated in Agricultural Science at the University of Padua in 1986. He obtained his PhD in Animal Science by completing a research program on the methods for assessing rumen degradability in ruminant feedstuffs. The research activities of Prof. Giulio Cozzi considered primarily the study of rumen degradability of different protein sources. Several studies have been carried out in the field of protein feeding of dairy cows. Studies with dairy cattle were also addressed to identify proper techniques of forage harvest and storage as well as to maximize the nutritional properties of grass and legume forages.
An important part of the research on dairy cattle has considered the alpine environment and in particular the analysis of the different livestock systems that operate in this part of the country. The research unit of Prof. Cozzi has carried out several studies with the financial support of the Department of Agriculture of the Veneto Region to establish guidelines for the management of dairy holdings operating in alpine environment. Specific feeding trials were conducted in a organic mountain dairy farm to evaluate alternative protein sources to soybean for feeding lactating cows. Other research has considered the development and validation of rapid, low-cost analytical tools to assess the traceability of alpine cheese produced from high or low-input dairy system operating in the mountains.
Studies on beef cattle analyzed specific breeding and feeding strategies for fattening bulls and veal calves. These research evaluated cattle production performance infra vitam and post mortem and meat quality.
Prof. Giulio Cozzi has recently carried out a series of studies on the welfare of beef and dairy cattle. Many of these studies were carried out with the financial support of the European Union under the EU project "Chain Management of veal calf welfare" and more recently, as part of the integrated project Welfare Quality® (www.welfarequality.net). In 2009, the research unit of prof. Cozzi has been involved in the project ALCASDE (www.alcasde.eu) funded by Directorate General Health and Consumer Protection of the European Union (DG-SANCO) and addressed to the study of alternatives to the current practice of dehorning in cattle.
