Career Trajectory
Bio
His main research interests include artificial and computational intelligence, fuzzy systems and reasoning , evolutionary computation, machine learning and, currently, he is investigating about the design and development of artificial and computational intelligence techniques by means of quantum technologies. In these topics, he has been invited to hold talks in foreign universities and at international conferences. Prof. Acampora designed and developed the Fuzzy Markup Language (FML), an XML-based language for modeling fuzzy systems in human-readable and hardware independent way. In 2016, he led an IEEE working group towards the standardization of FML. Today, the IEEE standard for FML is named IEEE 1855. As a result of this activity, he got a prestigious IEEE-SA Emerging Technology Award. Prof. Acampora was a Secretary and Treasurer of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (IEEE CIS) Italian Chapter (2010–2012). He chaired the IEEE CIS Standards Committee (2011-2013, 2016-2017). He is the Chair of IEEE-SA 1855WG, the working group that has published the IEEE Standard 1855 (on May 2016), the first IEEE standard in the area of fuzzy logic. He serves as an Editor in Chief of Springer Quantum Machine Intelligence, Associate Editor of Springer Soft Computing, Inderscience International Journal of Autonomous and Adaptive Communication Systems, and IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems. In 2017, he acted as General Chair of IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems, the top leading conference in the area of fuzzy logic. Moreover, he organized about several special sessions and workshops in international conferences. He is member of the scientific board of the Interdepartmental Center for Advanced RObotics in Surgery (ICAROS). He is Senior Member of IEEE. He is qualified to act as Full Professor at Italian universities in the following scientific areas: 01/B1 – INFORMATICA. In 2019, Prof. Acampora has been rewarded with a prestigious Canada-Italy Innovation Award, a grant allowing five Italian top researchers to visiting Canadian institutions and establishing new research relationships in hot areas. In this context, Prof. Acampora has been awarded in the field of Emergent Technologies with a project named “Quantum Machine Learning”. Finally, Prof. Acampora got an IBM Quantum Experience Academic Research Program Award for his research on quantum evolutionary computation.
