Career Trajectory
Bio
Gino Sorbello was born in Catania, Italy, in 1971.
In January 1996 he graduated with honors in Electronic Engineering at Catania University discussing an experimental thesis carried out at the Polytechnic of Milan and ITALTEL Society, entitled “Modello dell’amplificatore ottico ad Er-Yb in fibra e sua validazione sperimentale” (“Model of the fiber Er-Yb optical amplifier and its experimental validation”) tutor Prof. Paolo Laporta (Polytechnic of Milan) and Prof. Sebastiano Barbarino (Catania University).
From February 1996 to June 1996 he spent a period of specialization with the Optical-Amplifiers group of the ITALTEL Photonic Component Units, taking care of the optical-amplifier optimization and the study of cascaded amplifier configurations.
He received, in February 2000, the PhD degree in Electronic and Communications Engineering at Milan Polytechnic discussing the doctoral thesis entitled: “Erbium-Ytterbium solid-state lasers and amplifiers operating in the 1.5-micron wavelength region for applications to optical communications”.
From November 1998 to April 1999 and from December 1999 to March 2000, in the framework of the Doctorate and subsequently using the CNR (National Research Council) short term mobility program, he carried out search activity at the Optical Sciences Center, University of Arizona - Tucson - USA, for the theoretical and experimental study of active dielectric waveguides.
From January 2000 to January 2002 he had a research grant of the National Research Council relative to “Progetto Finalizzato Madess II”, at CNR “Centro di Elettronica Quantistica e Strumentazione Elettronica” - Polytechnic of Milan.
From 2002 to 2014 he is assistant professor in Electromagnetic Fields at Catania University.
Since November 2014 he is associate professor in Electromagnetic Fields with the Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering Department at Catania University where he currently carries out his scientific and didactic activity.
His research activity spanned across various fields of electromagnetism, including the development of laser sources and optical amplifiers in active fibres and dielectric waveguides, computational electromagnetism, the study and experimental development of microwave radiating structures and devices.
He is the author of more than 60 scientific publications in international journals and conferences in these fields.
