Gary Hawkins graduated with a PhD from the University of Reading in the UK in optical thin-film engineering. He is the Group Leader for the Infrared Multilayer Laboratory (IML) responsible for the spectral design and manufacture of the thermal infrared optical interference filters for the Lunar Thermal Mapper instrument on Lunar Trailblazer.
