Dr. Francisco Tovar is currently an academic at RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia) since 2015. At this same university he completed a doctorate in Biomedical Engineering (2007-2011), and later did a postdoctoral fellowship(2011-2014) financed by the Australian government, after obtaining the prestigious ARC-DECRA award (Discovery Early Career Research Award) granted by the Australian Research Council, and a postdoctoral fellowship awarded by the rectory of RMIT University (Vice Chancellor Fellowship).
Dr. Tovar has been a great promoter of bioengineering throughout his career. As a Mechanical Engineer from the National University of Mexico (UNAM), he completed his mechanical engineering thesis as intern in the National Institute of Rehabilitation INR in Mexico City, at the Biomechanics Lab, under the supervision of Dr. Victor Manuel Dominguez Hernandez, studying hip fractures in osteoporosis and possible exercises for rehabilitation to strengthen weaken areas of the femur, using mechanical design simulation tools (2004). Later on he worked for Innovamedica (2004-2006), a start-up company created by Dr. Emilio Sacristan. At Innovamedica, he contributed to the design of cardiovascular devices, obtaining a patent (registered in the United States as the sole inventor) for the hermetic chamber of the first Mexican artificial heart. In Australia, he created microfluidic platforms to study thrombosis, which allowed his biologist colleagues to discover a new mechanism of platelet aggregation (thrombosis), related to mechanotransduction, this work was published in the journal Nature Medicine, and generated a patent. Such a discovery has not only generated a new line of research on the biomechanics of platelet aggregation, but has also generated commercial interest in a device to detect coagulation diseases and to design more effective drugs for surgeries and to prevent stoke.
At RMIT University, he teaches Biomedical Instrumentation (6th semester), Cardiovascular Engineering (8th semester), and has also taught Research Methods (UG) and Project Planning (PG), a common core subject for engineering (more than 400 students), Mechanics and Materials, Design, Tutor of Computational Engineering. His lines of research are microfluidic transport for diagnostic purposes, mechanical characterization of microenvironments, sensors, development of embedded ceramic devices, micro actuators, vision, machine learning. To do this, it uses and creates tools for simulation, manufacturing, design, advanced manufacturing, as well as electronic circuits.
