I come by my broad biological perspective on diversity and equity naturally, because of both my origins and my interest in science. As a multicultural person, I feel stimulated by the diversity of the human population. My own experience in life and the people I have met inspire me to ensure that I live by these values. I was born in Mexico City to a Brazilian father and a Mexican mother. Because I grew up in a vibrant environment and had such diverse experiences, I have come to celebrate a mixture of cultures, having a natural attitude of respect and appreciation for all cultures and traditions. I was privileged to learn five languages and be exposed to as many cultures (English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian). I believe that if you know a language, you can use this knowledge to understand a culture deeply, building empathy for people. My research focuses on the evolution of the social life of vertebrates, with an emphasis on the genomic basis of social behaviors in birds. This is the emerging interdisciplinary field of sociogenomics and encompasses molecular biology, genomics, neuroscience, behavioral biology, and evolutionary biology. I have prioritized working with birds under natural conditions and used a comparative approach with -omic technologies, such as single-cell and high-throughput sequencing of transcriptomes, genomes, and epigenomes.
